Why our skin on hands and toes get wrinkles in water?

Most of us like to spend time under the shower especially a warm shower in winters. This gives a sense of relaxation and takes away the fatigue. But once we are out of this extended shower, we experience wrinkles on our hands and toes skin. Have you ever wondered why does our skin get wrinkles being under water for longer duration.

Lets reveal the mystery behind this.

Human skin contains a special oil which is called Sebum. This Sebum oil helps the skin to be lubricated and also makes the skin waterproof to a certain extent. But when the skin is exposed to water for longer duration, the sebum oil is washed away from the skin and the water enters through the outer layer of the skin.
The skin on hands and toes is thicker as compared to the skin on rest of the body. This skin is called epidermis. Epidermis contains more dead skin cells as compared to rest of the body. As soon as the skin oil is washed away, dead skin cells began to soak the water till it gets completely saturated with water.

After being fully soaked in water, the epidermis began to swell and pulls on deeper layers beneath. This swelling of epidermis is what causes the wrinkles on skin. The skin recovers to normal itself after sometime as once out of water the sebum start appearing on the skin again. This is why we observe that our skin gets back to normal in few minutes after we are out from the water. Other parts of the body apart from hands and toes contains thinner skin that is why it is less affected by the water. Thinner the skin, lesser are the dead skin cells so it does not soak the water.

So its the thick skin of our hands and toes which causes it to get wrinkled when exposed to water.
