What is the difference between a Dial Up and Broadband Internet connection?

Due to the requirement of high speed internet services, almost everyone of us is using broadband connections. But few years back, prior to the advancement of internet services most of us accessed internet via dial up connections. Lets find out what new features has broadband brought to the internet industry as compared to dial up connection.

Dial Up:

. Dial Up uses telephone lines to connect the PC to the internet. The modem in the PC calls the Internet Service Provider to gain access to the internet.
. Each time to modem connects to the ISP , the PC is assigned the unique IP address so that it can be uniquely identified.
. Since telephone lines are used for dial up, it is charged as call per minute similar to phone call charges.
. Analog transmission is used for dial up which limits the speed. Also, speed is affected with voice transmission which happens on the same line.
. Since a dial up is point to point connection it is far more secure than broadband connection. PC inbuilt modem first connects to the ISP and then its the ISP who makes the connection to the internet. So, it is difficult to breach into a dial up connection.
. The maximum transmission speed for dial up is 56,000 bytes per second or 56kbps.

BroadBand:

.Broadband connection also uses telephone lines but the ones which are not used for voice transmission. So the connection doesn’t get affected due to voice transmission.
. The transmission speed can go upto 50 mbps which is way higher when compared to dial up connection.
. Broad Band connections are charged monthly, which is mostly on the basis of bandwidth usage.
. Digital transmission is used for broadband which enables it to acquires high transmission speeds.
. Inbuilt PC modem is not used for broadband connection. It requires a external modem to make connections.
. Cyber attacks are very common for broadband connections as it is less secured. Usually a firewall device is required to make it more secure.
